The Ultimate Chess Puzzle Book
This book provides a wealth of puzzle positions to test just about every facet of your tactical skills. The puzzles in this book have been selected by analysing games new and old in search of original puzzle positions. It is very unlikely that even seasoned solvers will recognise many of these positions. Emms, by allying his skills with those of powerful computers, has also made every effort to ensure that the solutions are sound, and that there are no unmentioned alternative solutions. The book begins with 100 relatively easy positions suitable for novices, and ends with 100 extremely tough puzzles, which provide a mindbending challenge even for topclass players. There are 1001 puzzles in all.

It's Your Move: Tough Puzzles
Feeling up to a challenge? In this highly original and instructive selftest book, Grandmaster Chris Ward presents a selection of carefully chosen puzzles to solve. Hot on the heels of his very successful It's Your Move and Improvers It's Your Move, comes It's Your Move: Tough Puzzles, which this time aims to rack the brains of even the most experienced chess players. The puzzles might be a bit more difficult this time but, in the same style of the previous two books, the reader is once again helped by the choice of five plausible plans and has to decide which is the most likely to succeed. The answers then identify the most promising plan and explain why the other choices are less attractive. Instead of opting for the traditional 'check, check, mate ... mate!' type of puzzles, Ward concentrates on situations which are much more likely to occur in practical games.

To facilitate concentration, only 2 illustrations appear on each page, with a slight parenthetical hint at the top of each position. Answers to each puzzle and a tactics index allow players to study examples of individual strategies.

Simple Chess Tactics and Checkmates
Simple Chess Tactics & Checkmates By Tony Gillam Summary So you know how to move the chess pieces and you can recognise a checkmate, but what do you do now? This book will take you the next step: to the exciting world of chess tactics. Tactics involve thinking ahead, finding ways to win your opponent's pieces without losing your own. In this book you will find many of the tactical tricks used by the best players, including how to make use of pins, forks and skewers to win your games. One of the most satisfying things in chess is to checkmate your opponent's king ? especially if this can be done in style. Author Tony Gillam reveals how to spot an opportunity with hundreds of examples of forced checkmates each explained step by step with clear diagrams. About the Author Tony Gillam was a primary school teacher and spent many years teaching young children to play. Since then he has been a publisher and editor of specialist chess books with several hundred books to his name.

Test Your IQ
Overall, this is a short and informative book. It's not for MENSA-types, looking for challenging IQ-like questions...but it will provide some insight into your thinking patterns (left vs. right-brain). As one previous reviewer noted, I think some of the questions are not culture-fair so don't take your score too seriously if it's low...

The ABC's of Chess
In contrast this book, one of Pandolfini's most advanced, is aimed at players around 1350-1450. Consisting of 50 articles culled from his old chess magazine column, it has some very useful explanation and illustration of the sort of strategic ideas that players of this strength seek, with a depth of analysis that is shallow enough for these players to follow without a board. (I'm about 1500, and this book is just a bit too simple for me. By the way, I was about 1200 at the start of the year, so I do know what I'm talking about when I suggest how beginners can improve.)
